MCYU in the CITY – Workshop Descriptions

Water You Talking About?

Together, we will celebrate one of the necessities of life on Earth; water! Get ready to get dirty and experience the effects of local water contamination. Explore how it affects your everyday life and discover how to get involved and protect our Hamilton waters!

iCompute

How do computers think? Do we think like computers? Or, do computers think like us? This interactive workshop invites you to explore what a computer is and how a computer "thinks". Be a computer scientist for a day and explore the world of “algorithms”!

Backyard Biodiversity

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different kinds of plants and animals around you? Do you know how and why they work together? Be a biologist for a day and explore the fascinating diversity of nature in your backyard by building your very own ecosystem!

Decoding Disease

Ever wondered how literature and science work together to help us uncover infectious diseases and medical discoveries? Clues are hidden within all kinds of literature to help us better understand our modern world of medicine. Come put on your thinking caps and reading spectacles to decode literary evidence of human diseases, trace the spread of infectious diseases, and find ways to protect yourself from the disease.

Find Your Focus

Isn’t it interesting how you could be so focused on a task one moment and - suddenly - you find your head is in the clouds? Daydreaming can be fun, but sometimes it can make learning extremely difficult. Come join us in testing the limits of your attention! Discover how to re-center your thoughts through a series of calming activities. Are you ready to find YOUR focus?

Community Builders

What makes a community great? Work as a team to design your very own community.  Enter a world where anything is possible … but everything has a cost. Be ready to make tough decisions, compromise, and get creative ... especially when your community faces a challenge.

Microbes

Dangerous microbes have escaped Germ Jail and are infecting people all around the world! Your mission: Find the microbes before more people get sick. Join the Microbe Special Agent Force (MSAF) and use your problem-solving skills to help prevent and treat the spreading infection caused by the escaped microbes! But wait! Could some of the microbes actually be good for you? Your first assignment as a member of MSAF is to save the good microbes and kill the bad ones!

Contagion

Imagine you are a mad scientist! You have the ingenious idea to create a virus that only you will have the vaccine to. You plan to infect the planet causing a zombie pandemic, but first you have to design the perfect virus. You will be an expert on virus transmission and “virulence” by the end of this workshop!
